News From Northern Estates |
One of the things that I like about our facility is our sense of tradition. We continue with the old and build on them to make improvements and during our Eden experience we have developed new activities that are becoming tradition. One definition of tradition is "cultural continuity". I like that term!
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving we continued our tradition of conducting our Community Thanksgiving Service. It was a very special worship service led by Reverend Edward Traxler and Mr. Sam Waddell. We thank both of them for sharing their gifts with us. The service allows staff to worship with our residents, families, friends from the community, and many of our board members who join us in giving thanks for all the wonderful blessings we have received during the past year.
As we look to the Christmas season, we have changed the manner in which we celebrate here at the facility. For the first twenty-four years in this building we had our party on Christmas Eve in the Lawson Dining Room. But due to the ever-increasing number of guests that huge room was simply not adequate. What a wonderful dilemma for the staff – how to handle all the folks who want to be a part of the Christmas Party at Mountainview. "Christmas in the Neighborhood" was born out of necessity. Thus a new tradition was started three years ago and this year will be the best yet. Following Santa’s visits to the neighborhoods we will all gather in the Lawson Dining Room for the delicious treats prepared by Nancy and Johnny and our Dietary Department staff.
Please see inside for all the details and plan on joining us. Be safe this Holiday Season and visit with us often.

NEWS FROM WESTSIDE GARDENS
The community Thanksgiving Service was very nice and the staff and residents really enjoyed it. Many of our friends attended from the community, which added so much to the service.
Our halls are all adorned with magnolia border, a special thanks to Rhonda Wilder for her hard work in putting it up. We are in the process of decorating for Christmas and we are really looking forward to Santa coming soon!
Our sympathy is extended to the families of Ms. Grace Phillips and Ms. Ruth Smith who passed away recently. We wish Mr. Jacob Masters good luck as he continues to recover at home. We will miss all of these family members of Mountainview that are no longer here.
We would like to welcome Mr. Clyde Wilson, Ms. Airleen Dial and Ms. Lillian Guy to our neighborhood. We hope that they will enjoy their stay with us and soon feel a part of our family.

ACTIVITIES
Christmas is upon us. But for Mountainview the spirit of Christmas is evidenced all year long by the special concerns and the spirit of giving shown by our community, family members and staff. I am especially reminded how blessed our residents are when our phones begin ringing and the spirit of giving is increased ten times over with caring and concern that all of our residents will have a good Christmas Day. We appreciate all the special things you do all year long.
The activity calendars are up on the boards in the neighborhoods so be sure to check so you don’t miss out on the holiday festivities.
Thanks and hats off to Cedar Springs and Morningside Baptist Church for escorting our residents while they shopped for Christmas at Walmart. We couldn’t have done it without you.
We extend our sympathies to the families of the residents we lost this past month. We thank you for letting us become part of the care and love you had for your loved one. Mr. Leroy Campbell, Ms. Martha Butler, Ms. Grace Phillips, Ms. Lynn Medlin, Ms. Earline Horton and Ms. Ruth Smith all will be missed by the staff and other residents of our home.
We look forward to seeing you at our " Christmas in the Neighborhood" on Dec. 24th.
Until next time

CREATIVE THINKING
An elderly man, harassed by the taunts of the neighborhood children, devised a scheme. He offered to pay them a dollar each if they would return on Tuesday and yell their insults again.
The children did so eagerly and received the money. Then he told them he would pay only 25 cents on Wednesday. When they returned, insulted him again and collected their quarters, he informed them that Thursday’s rate would be just a penny. "Forget it" they said – and never taunted him again.
