If you have been to your doctor, dentist or had prescriptions filled in the past few weeks, you have no doubt been informed of new privacy rules regarding your personal health information. All health care providers must now follow rules and regulations contained in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This law, which went into effect last month, is designed to give each one of us more control of our health information and assures us that information about us will be held in confidence by providers and only used for treatment of billing purposes.
Our facility is covered under the HIPAA privacy rules and we need to review this information with our family members who are serving as Responsible Party. It would certainly help us out if you would call your Social Worker or drop by their office when you are in the facility. It will only take a few minutes and we will ask that you acknowledge by your signature that we have made you aware of our privacy rules. We thank you in advance for your help.
Please make plans to be with us for the Eden Celebration and please visit with us often.
Wilson K. Dillard, Administrator

We Bid You Farewell!
Dogs are next door to being human in my estimation. The poet Byron wrote these lines:
'Tis sweet to hear the watchdog's honest bark
Bay deep-mouth'd welcome as we draw near home;
'Tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark
Our coming, and look brighter when we come.
We received a call from the humane society sometime back. They knew we were looking for a dog and they had just the one! The dog was Smoky and his owner had become quite ill and could no longer care for him. Smoky quickly adjusted to his new home at Mountainview. He welcomed you with a tail wag and what appeared to be a smile. He appeared to gravitate toward certain ones, a pretty nurse on Westside Gardens, Lisa Graham and a nice guy (resident), Barry Jennings, on Eastside Village. Barry always appeared to have leash in hand or nearby. The two of them were inseparable. Who can forget the trips to the Vet by Ms. Tracy, RN. I think Smoky had one of the best nurses in town providing for his care.
We knew that Smoky was an older dog when we agreed to take him. We never imagined that the experience would be only a year in duration. Yet, on this occasion we pause to reflect on the donation given by our first dog in our Eden journey. Smoky was a compassionate dog. He was laid back. He did not get in a hurry. He would approach anyone and when your arm tired, he had a look that said -- I could use some more of that. Can't we all?
Smoky was carefree. He allowed all of us, even in the midst of a busy day, to pause and reflect on merely being and knowing the value of being appreciated. Smoky brought life, energy, and vitality to our midst. We bid him farewell, knowing that his days on the earth were good ones. We cared for him because he could not speak or advocate for himself. He cared for us through acceptance and presence. Farewell!

We’re moving right along and it is already May! It’s time for more fun and celebration, so get ready. We are going to honor our volunteers on May 8th with Volunteer Appreciation Night in the main dining room. Hats off to some of the best volunteers in the land. They are always willing to share and give of their time, as well as themselves, never expecting anything in return.
Special get well wishes to Mrs. Mary Sumner, who has been a long time volunteer, and is now home recuperating after having major surgery. We hope she’ll soon be out and back with us again. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of Mrs. Sherry Schlutz, a volunteer here who passed away several days ago. Sherry was the wife of Mr. Dickey Schlutz who also volunteers here.
Once again it’s time to honor all of our staff here at Mountainview. Here at Mountainview we are a truly a family. We have great staff menbers who work well together through all kinds of weather to get the job done, no matter what the job may be.
What comes to mind when you think of fancy dresses and suits? It can only mean one thing - it's time for the Senior Prom at Mountainview. The Tippers have called and told us to get ready. The theme for this yearr's prom is "Mardi Gras". Chris White, the Tippers, and their parents have done a great deal of prepration to ensure that a great time is had by all.
The seeds and plants have been planted in the garden. Justine, Johnny, and our elders are glad they got them planted before the rain. Justine picked the first strawberry this week from the strawberry plants. We can't wait for the harvest to begin.
Don’t forget our Eden Celebration on May 17, 2003 from 1:00 - 4:00PM. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
Congratulations to Candance Nicole Fowler who graduated from Spartanburg Technical College on May 6, 2003. Candace is employed at Mountainview in the nursing department and is the granddaughter of Gloria Crocker. Congratulations to all the graduates of 2003.
Until Next Time,
Gloria Crocker, Activities

PRINCIPLE FIVE
An Elder – centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom.
The Elder centered community is rich in opportunities to sample these ancient pleasures. The Eden Alternative is not a new and trendy idea. It is based on ancient principles. People are surprised when all we have to offer are ideas, yet ideas themselves are thousands of years old.
We should always be looking to enrich established habits and embroider new traditions. Cultivating a tradition of spontaneity takes time and sustained effort. The incredible power of good deeds done without the expectations of return is a stimulus to promote the same behaviors in others. The longer and more faithfully you apply yourself to such an effort the more people want to know about it and be a part of it.
The Elder’s ability to bring spontaneity and variety into their day to day lives is dependent on the staff’s success at modeling this behavior. Staff routines and habits surround many frail Elder’s lives. The ultimate success comes when Elders begin to find variety and spontaneity creeping back into their lives. We all can share stories that speak to the joy that can be had from being surprised by an unexpected event. Listen to Elders talk about their lives. How often do you hear the comment "The darnedest thing happened the other day…." Variety and spontaneity are what keep us interested in life! Let’s get in the habit of doing something spontaneous! It’s a good habit to develop!

It was only one short year ago that we were writing about our new dog "Smoky". Smoky was the first dog the facility brought in to live with us. Boy did he make a big difference in the lives of everyone involved with Mountainview! "Smoky" brought many a smile to the elders of our home. On May 6th Smoky went to his heavenly home where I know he is running in the meadows and drinking from the cool streams. We will never forget our friend and hope that he will never forget us. We miss you Smoky. Thank you for being such a loyal friend.
