Usually in this space in The Mountain Breeze, we discuss current activities here at the facility, both those that we are promoting or the success of recent efforts by our staff and residents. We also reflect on our recent history, particularly since beginning our Eden journey some five years ago. However, with Governor Mark Sanfords visit to Mountainview to announce a new initiative to expand community based services for people who are at the nursing home level of care but desire to remain in their homes, we had the opportunity to look farther back into history.
It was indeed appropriate of the Governor to choose Mountainview to announce the beginning of South Carolina Choice to expand community based services for it was in this facility that one of the first community based services was offered, our Medical Day Care program which began on September 1, 1980. Yes, we have been providing this service to the citizens of Spartanburg County for the past twenty-three years.
We were and remain committed to people having choices as they attempt to meet their medical and social needs and we believe those choices should include a wide variety of services in the home. However when home care is no longer an option, we want to be the facility of choice for Medicaid long term care services. We want choices and quality of life to continue following admission. Mr. Taylor had the opportunity to share our philosophy and this commitment to our residents with the Governor during his visit.
We are proud of the history of Mountainview and the vital role that we have played in the development of long term care services in our state and we look forward to working with the state as we continue to improve both quality and access to long term care services.
Enjoy this special time of year and please visit with us often.

Ah, hospitality! It is one of the necessary elements. Nowhere will a person find people more open to hospitality than the people of Latin America. Often they have few luxuries and yet, they are prone to put back, not for hoarding, but for sharing out of what they have to live on as people. It is a winsome thing. Have you noticed that Grandmother always tries to feed you when you go to her house? Have you noticed that to feel truly at home you have to have what I call refrigerator rights? You go back home and you are not there twenty minutes before you are standing in front of the refrigerator, often just looking.
The need to be hospitable does not end at a particular age. It is part of every day we live. The same is true with those with long term care. They want to practice hospitality. We, at Mountainview, want to make sure that they have the opportunity. Do you have any suggestions? We constantly remind families and friends that the gazebo is available, along with various areas of the dinning room. These and other areas are available and we like seeing them utilized. We, also realize that you have to have access to certain items in order to practice hospitality. These things can be provided through various means including family and Mountainview. Again, do you have suggestions? Have you ever said, "I wish we could . . . . I wish we had . . . ?" Follow through next time on those words. My son is serving in the Middle East will be home Saturday for two weeks of R&R. Be assured that the refrigerator is on its way to being stocked. I know what he likes. The only other person who will enjoy it more - is me! I am going to practice hospitality.
The holidays are approaching. What a time to practice hospitality. Let it be a two way street. I am already in the mood for goblins, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year! Will you celebrate with us? Let the party and fellowship begin.!

Fun, Fun, Fun was had by all during the luau in August. The Hawaiian setting complete with palm trees, fish, tropical birds, fruits and Hawaiian cusine was wonderful. Lets not forget about the "Limbo" and the grass skirts and leis. It was surreal. So if you didnt get to attend, please ask to see the pictures of this great event.
Were happy that the weather was really great for the Eden Celebration on last Saturday. Everyone seemed to have had a great time. The kids really enjoyed the fun toys, moon walk and the basketball game, I also saw some of the staff enjoying themselves on the basketball bounce game. The cotton candy, hot dogs, popcorn and lemonade brought out the kid in most of the adults. Yours truly included. A big thanks to Two or more, Ms. Greer Casey and Mr. Bob Crawley and the cloggers for the great entertainment. We always look forward to the tribute to the America Flag that the cloggers do.
We are fast approaching fall and looking forward to our fall festivities. Western Day was so much fun for the staff and residents. It was a beautiful day for being outside. The trip to the fair is coming up on October 8th and our residents are really looking forward to it. Then we have the Halloween Party at the end of the month. You will be hearing more about these events.
We welcome our new Elders and encourage you to participate in all our activities here at Mountainview.
Until Next Time,
Gloria Crocker, Activities
The residents of Eastside Village are enjoying this time of year, the cooler weather is a break and we can go outside and be comfortable. We really enjoyed the Eden Celebration. The cloggers were sensational and the food was excellent.
We are looking forward to coming events such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is hard to believe another year is almost gone. But we are thankful for this year and all the things that have happened in our home this year. As you can see when you visit we are creating Main Street on the main hall in the office area. It is amazing to watch Clive Haynes create his art. Stay tuned for the next project we come up with.
The residents and staff of Eastside Village would like to send our condolences to the families and friends of Martha Wood who recently passed away. She will be missed by all.
We would like to welcome our newest resident Thelma Burnett who is living in our neighborhood. Please help us make her feel welcomed in her new home.
The Town Crier
Northern Estates would like to welcome our new residents that have moved into the neighborhood. They are Ms. Clara Allison, Ms. Ollie Mae Davis and Mrs. Kathy Clayton. We hope they will soon feel at home with us.
We would like to send our condolences to the families and friends of Ms. Emma Martin and Ms. Alma Wadsworth who passed away in August and September. We will miss them very much.
We are continuing to work on several projects in our neighborhood. We have purchased new tables for the dayroom and have gotten some new chairs for "Lolas Corner". We are a work in progress.
The Eden Celebration was a lot of fun for our residents, one of our younger residents in our neighborhood really enjoyed the day he laughed the entire time he was outside. He probably enjoyed himself better than anyone out at the celebration. We are real glad that Leslie was able to join in the fun.
We look forward to fall and all the activities that will be coming up.
Staff and Residents of Northern Estates
Residents of Westside Gardens really enjoyed the Hawaiian Luau we had at the end of August. We did the "limbo" which was a lot of fun. We have had a very busy few months. We just had our "Western Day" with horse and buggy rides and a delicious barbeque. Thanks to our dietary staff for all the good food and especially Johnnie and Nancy.
We are getting ready for the leaves to turn and enjoying the fall weather. The fair is coming up and excitement is in the air. The resident and staff always enjoy this event every year.

QUOTE
GREAT VICTORIES COME, NOT THROUGH EASE BUT BY FIGHTING VALIANTLY AND MEETING HARDSHIPS BRAVELY.
HUMAN GROWTH MUST NEVER BE SEPARATED FROM HUMAN LIFE.
Older adults have the capacity to continue to grow emotionally and psychologically as they remember and reminisce their life story. In this stage of life, meaning and value can be discovered through loving and being loved and living in relationships with others. This excerpt was taken from the "Faith Perspectives on the Ten Principles" written by Mike Sease. Reflecting on this I see that Mountainview has practiced this principle for many years, even before we knew what "The Eden Alternative" was. We the staff, family members and residents give so much love on a daily basis that I think we take it for granted sometimes.
Our work here is human work not mechanical work. The people we work with, the organization we work for and the people whom we care for all belong to the living world. This is what has made Mountainview so unique. We all know this and have accepted the challenge of leading our residents to the realization that the nursing home is not the end of the story. It is the next chapter in the book of life and everyone has something to offer and a purpose for being where we are today.
The staff of Mountainview are some of the most wonderful people I have had the privilege of knowing and working with. They care about each other but most of all they care about the residents. One of the funny things that has happened in our Eden Journey has been how hard it was for some of the staff to grasp that they were doing "Eden" without even realizing that they were doing it. They just kept talking about the animals, plants and children. Then it was like a light bulb went off in their heads and they said "Oh, I get it!" Eden is about the residents and not about the animals, plants and children, which are mere components. Wow, they got it!!! Eden is heart.
Our residents are happy and they will tell you, "we are loved and we feel it". What a testimony for our home and for The Eden Alternative. Our journey has just begun and we know there will be frost along the way. The frost that we encounter will help us grow and become stronger people. This journey is shared by all who enter our home.
I wish for all of those that are on this journey the success that we have felt and I hope everyone will finally "get it" . " Eden comes from the heart!" Thank you Mr. Dillard, Board of Director, staff, residents and family members for getting it. We would not be where we are today without your support. Our new motto "Im
changing, are you?" represents the feeling of our staff and residents in our facility. Are you ready to say " Im changing, are you?"
