This Christmas we will once again be celebrating in each of our neighborhoods. On Christmas Eve, carolers as well as Santa will visit in the neighborhoods with a social and refreshments following in the Lawson Dining Room. We certainly invite everyone to be with us for this very special time. Details of the plans are included in this edition of the Mountain Breeze.
We have talked about this in the past, but I think it bears repeating. Christmas is perhaps the most difficult time for many of our residents. The feelings of separation from family and friends become far more intense at this time of year. Just this week I have talked with two of our residents who were telling me how much they dread spending Christmas Day in the facility. After the busy and hectic activity schedule we experience with the Christmas Eve parties, there is such a let down on Christmas Day. Please keep this in mind as you make your holiday plans and please include a visit to the facility if not Christmas Day, then soon after. And as always, please visit with us often and enjoy the holidays.
Wilson K. Dillard, Administrator
Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go, especially Mountainview! The atmosphere and setting here at Mountainview changes with the seasons of the year. The trees are being trimmed, presents are being wrapped, carols are heard, greetings exchanged. Theres just a good feel in the air.
There will be Christmas parties in the neighborhoods, families and friends will be gathering at certain times convenient for them. Our desire is to express to each of you the best of what the holidays offer. May it be a time of light, peace, hope, nurture, love, and the formation of memories.
There is a desire for you to hear, feel, and embrace the message of this season in the lights, songs, and visits. May you find the strength you need in the hands you touch and the faces that you look upon. In fact, there is no better place to see, hear, and believe the magic and truth of Christmas than the setting here at Mountainview. Do you believe? Come and see. May the season be filled with laughter and song. Those two ingredients are needed in our day. A great philosopher once said that laughter is a burst of sudden glory. And yes, the Christmas message has to be sung! You sing the story in all its glory and splendor. May the splendor envelop your life and that of the ones you love.
Merry Christmas!

My how time flies when youre having fun and the staff and Elders here at Mountainview have been working and playing so intensely that Christmas is upon us again almost before we realized it. So, we have begun the hustle and bustle of getting ready for our Christmas Celebrations.
We are also looking forward to all of the special visits that well be having from our friends in the surrounding community who care enough to bring joy to our Elders by caroling and spreading good tidings throughout our home. And I can truly say that this goodwill not only happens at Christmas, but all year long.
During the Christmas Season, we often have many emotions that come into play and often we become anxious or sad because we are not able to have or give to others. Lets remember the real reason for the season. Its about Christ, who loves us and desires that we give love to our fellow man. When we truly love well have Peace which dwells in the heart. "Peace" is the answer I received from several of our residents and staff members when asked the question "If you could have anything you want for Christmas, what would you want?" Lets all continue to love and pray for Peace.
We are saddened by the death of Leo, our poodle, who lived and brought much happiness to our Elders and staff. There will be a Pet Blessing held in his memory December 18th at 2:00 pm on Eastside Village.
Sympathy is extended to our Director of Nursing, Robin Jones, due to the death of her mother, Alice Jenkins.
Our December calendars are up on the halls so please check them for daily happenings. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
Until Next Time, God bless

The neighborhood is beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Everyone is getting excited and we hope that you are too. There has already been a lot of activity around with people coming in to celebrate Thanksgiving with their loved one. We are looking forward to all the visitors we will have during this festive season but please dont forget us after the festivities are over.
Our Christmas party will be on Christmas Eve and it will be in our neighborhood. Please make plans to be here for that special day. Also the "Jingle Bell Run" will take place on December 9th at 3:30 pm. If you have never attended this activity please make plans to be here. There will be around 900 kids from all over Spartanburg County running through the building singing Christmas Carols. It is really an experience you do not want to miss.
We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

THE POWER OF ATTITUDE
Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst .a spark that creates extraordinary results.
PRIORITIES
A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove but the world may be different because I was important in the life of an Elder.
COLLABORATE
Be the light that others can come to with their ideas, vision and dreams. Never doubt that blending your talents with those of others can change the world.
And she gave birth to her first born son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the Inn. Luke 2:7
WISE LEADERSHIP IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF ANY STRUGGLE AGAINST THE THREE PLAGUES. FOR IT, THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE.
The Eden Alternative has already defined the spirit of what we are trying to accomplish. We seek to enrich and repair this world by helping people grow. Human growth is our organizations reason for existence. The Eden Alternative also teaches us that it also defines the staffs relationship with Elders. Rewriting the rulebook, with the Elders needs in mind, requires you to demonstrate leadership in action. True leaders begin where they are able. We should start with what we can do. If the soil is cold, warm it with good deeds done without expectation of return. We must concentrate on the unwritten rules that define management-staff relationships. We must not throw up our hands and complain nothing can be done. Remember that we lead by example.
If management is willing to redefine the relationship with staff, they are setting the stage for the staff to redefine their relationships with Elders. The terms of that redefinition cannot be enforced from above. Never forget the first law of the universe. You must give before you can get.
Great leaders hold the people they lead in their hearts. The building you work in will someday crumble into dust. The good you do for others will remain in this world long past that day. Do you have the courage to rise consistently above the mundane; to reach for that which endures?
If you seek to make a world that enriches the lives of Elders and caregivers, you must enrich your life as well. If you want to give to others you must give to yourself. No matter what your background or current organizational rank, you have the power to change the world for your Elders. Believe in yourself and the world will believe in you.
This is sacred work. If you have not begun then you should begin now.

On December 9th 12th we will be hosting an Eden Associate Training here at the facility. The class starts on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 and ends on Friday around lunch. While they are here they will get a true glimpse of Eden by being in this facility and all the activities that will be going on during the week. We hope that they will take back to their facilities the knowledge that culture change starts with the individual and one step at a time. Culture change is not an over night change it may take decades to create the ideal home because things are constantly changing. We hope that if you are in the facility visiting you will try to meet these people and let them know how special Eden is to your family member.
CHRISTMAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
PLEASE JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2003
AS WE CONTINUE OUR TRADITION!!
The tradition of having Christmas in the neighborhoods continues this year. Our neighborhoods have brought a new and exciting uniqueness of their own to Mountainview. In keeping with the principles of Eden the new neighborhoods will have their fourth Christmas at HOME.
Please deliver any gifts that you purchase for your loved one to the Activities Department by Friday, December 19th. All packages need to be wrapped and the residents name printed on a large gift tag. Please label all clothing with residents name before wrapping the gift. Please let us know if there will be a problem, as we would like for each of our residents to have a gift under the tree in their neighborhood. You may contact Social Services if there will be a problem.
Santa and the Strolling Minstrels will visit each neighborhood beginning at 10:30 am on Eastside Village. We will then move to Northern Estates around 11:00am and will conclude on Westside Gardens around 11:30. Santa will distribute presents as he visits the neighborhoods.
Refreshments will be available in the Lawson Dining Room beginning at 11:30 am. Please plan on joining us as we have an Eden Christmas in the neighborhoods.
