Eden Celebration 05/15

From the desk of ………….

We hope you have enjoyed the first few days of March with the daytime temperatures approaching 70 degrees. Quite a dramatic change from last week. When the snow ended last Friday morning, I measured the depth at eleven inches in front of the building. Our staff assisted many of our residents who wanted to get out in the snow. The temperature was mild for that much snow, so we had a wonderful time outside. It was not long until the staff had built two quite large snowmen in full view from the hallways for all of us to enjoy.

In talking about the bad weather last week and also the sleet and ice storm that hit us back at the end of January, I would remiss if I did not acknowledge the great job that the "Snow Crew" did during these difficult days. My heartfelt thanks goes out to our plant services staff for transporting the snow crew to and from the facility. Chuck, Jerry, Brian and Mr. Taylor worked long hours in ensuring that our beloved staff was transported safely. Again, I thank them for their dedication and moreover, their skill in negotiating some very treacherous roads and driveways. We may have bumped a mailbox or two, but other than that, those guys completed their very difficult job without incident.

I’m hoping we are through with the ice and snow for this winter, even though my mom says the almanac is calling for two more snows! You always want your mom to be correct, however, in this situation, I hope she is wrong.

This month we will have our Family Night on the twenty-fifth. Please see the details in this issue and it’s not too early to start thinking about our Eden Celebration on May 15th beginning this year at 11:00 am. Our staff is hard at work with the planning process and we anticipate the best party yet.

Many good things continue to take place at Mountainview and we encourage you to follow the Activity Calendar and join us at any event. As always, please visit with us often.

EXIT OR ENTRANCE

Think to yourself: "Is the door just ahead an entrance or an exit?" The answer will determine our feelings and reactions. If the answer is exit, then there is no future. If the answer is entrance, then the door leads to a continuation of pilgrimage. The entrance leads to a new phase and stage of life and living.

This "door" stands before us many times in life. It may be the trek to college, marriage, a career (0r career change), divorce, disability, loss of a loved one, entering a nursing home, etc. The choice(s) we make often depends on how fully we are grasping and living life. It also depends on the companions we have along the way.

We need companions! I have a collie dog that is a welcomed companion. We still roll, tumble and play as though I was still a kid. She is jealous and does not like for someone to touch me, even in an embrace. I have my family and friends. I am getting older and my hair grayer. I no longer attempt to mold them into individuals that meet my fancy. I simply appreciate the affection, support, tenderness, and affirming care that we give and receive. I spend much of my energy maintaining and improving these relationships. They mean everything to me.

There are situations that place real or imagined barriers to maintaining friendships/relationships. There can be walls of separation from the "community" that one knew and felt a vital part of in life. If a person has loved life then she will have loved others. How can you have growth without companions, good relationships? It is impossible. Therefore, the third Eden Alternative principle: companionship is essential for a garden and continued growth.

Keith Taylor

ACTIVITIES

Spring is in the air! The daffodils and goldenrods are blooming and the birds are gaily singing. It’s hard to believe that we had a huge snow a few days ago, but this is March and March is usually full of surprises!

February also brought some surprises, one of which the most memorable was Stephen Davis, with the Carolina Panthers, his wife and mother visiting the facility. Also visiting the facility with Stephen was SC House Representative Brenda Lee and former Spartanburg Mayor James Talley. Stephen came out to say "thanks" for the support that we here at Mountainview gave the Panthers prior to the Super Bowl by holding a Panthers Pep Rally. We thank our residents, staff and their family members for giving them a warm welcome. We appreciate you Stephen and the entire Panther team!

The activity calendars for March are posted so please check them out for our upcoming events. Our Elders are eagerly anticipating the Easter shopping trip on March 30th. This is one of the activities they love and look forward to.

Mr. Haynes has finished the painting of "Main Street" so if you have not seen it please stop by and do so. It’s great!

An apology is in order because in our last newsletter I failed to extend sympathy to Ms. Sarah Foster who’s sister passed and to Brenda Rhodes for the passing of her father, Mr. Waddell, who was a resident here at Mountainview.

We are still playing "Mountainview Bingo" and we’ve had several winners so far. The prize is a gift certificate to McDonalds. This is facility wide so if you don’t have a Bingo card please check with the activity department.

Congratulations are due to Ms. Elaine Meadows who was chosen as Mountainview’s CNA of the year. We are proud of you Elaine, keep up the good work!

Until Next Time,

Gloria Crocker, Activities

EASTSIDE VILLAGE

Eastside Village is enjoying the great weather that the month of March has brought. We are all hoping that it continues. We are looking forward to being able to get outside and work in the garden and in our raised flower beds.

The staff and residents of Eastside Village send our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Annie Laurence. Ms. Laurence had been a resident here for over a year and she passed away in the month of February. We will really miss her!

We hope to see all of our family and friends on Family Night. Please be sure to let Social Services know if you are planning on attending.

Come to visit and see what we are accomplishing on Eastside Village.

NEWS FROM WESTSIDE GARDENS

All of us on Westside Gardens hope that everyone is enjoying the warm weather that we have been having. We enjoyed the snow and watching Brian build a snowman, but we sure are looking forward to the warm weather. One day last week, we even got to eat out under the gazebo because the weather was so nice.

We would like to send our condolences to the family and friends of Etta Powers and Airleen Dial, both of whom passed away in the month of February. Both of these ladies will be greatly missed at Mountainview.

We would also like to welcome Rhonda Price, Daisy Roddy, and Clara Kelly to Westside Gardens. We hope that you will all soon feel at home at Mountainview!

We are all looking forward to Family Night that is coming up this month and to the Eden Celebration that has been planned for May 15th. We hope to see everyone at both of these events.

Please drop by and visit with us! We look forward to seeing you!
