With this edition of The Mountain Breeze, we extend a special invitation for you and your friends and family to join us for our Sixth Annual Eden Celebration on Saturday, May 15th. Our Eden Steering Committee has put together a fun program for all of us to enjoy. We will have plenty of food and refreshments for the children and adults alike. We hope you will make every effort to come and be a part of this special day at Mountainview. It is our way of expressing our gratitude to all of our friends who have supported our effort with The Eden Alternative.
I want to thank Keith, Anna and Sue for representing us at the Geriatric Best Practices meeting last week in Charleston. As we announced some months back our facility was chosen as a Best Practice for our implementation of The Eden Alternative. The Best Practices initiative was an effort through the South Carolina Hospital Association funded by the Duke Endowment. We are very proud of this distinction and special recognition and this award needs to be shared with the entire Mountainview family. As we teach to our staff, we celebrate our successes as a family and when there are problems we work to solve them as a family. No one of us is as smart as the ALL of us. It is due to the efforts of all of us that we have achieved the favorable outcomes as we have moved along our Eden Journey.
Hope to see you all on May 15th, and as always, please visit with us often.
Wilson K. Dillard, Administrator
The Sage Center and the South Carolina Hospital Association under a Duke Endowment grant went searching! The search was to find entities that were out ahead of the curve, if you will, when it comes to providing care and services to the elder population.
The fruit of that search was recognized last month at a conference held in Charleston, SC. There were groups from hospitals, hospices, long term care facilities, transportation systems, police departments, mobile meals, one call referral services, dementia care specialists, etc.
The aim of the study was to seek out and find people who were improving the lives of seniors, have a care strategy in place that is sustainable, have future benefit, proven positive and measurable outcomes, and be able to financially sustain the program. The conference was an effort to bring the ones selected together and begin collaboration.
It is amazing to see how many good things are being accomplished in an effort to enhance elder care and health in communities. Elders want life-style choices and to be informed. Oh, the importance of looking ahead and planning for the unique needs of a growing segment of the population. In fact, last year saw the population of elders 60 years old and older grow at a greater rate than the population of young people 17 and below in Mecklenburg county, NC.
With all of this said, we are proud at Mountainview to be selected as a Geriatric Best Practice. This award is possible through the work and support of our community, residents, families, board, and staff. Congratulations Mountainview!

Spring is here and we are looking forward to all of the good things that it brings. When I think of spring I think of new life. Here at Mountainview we about life, living and loving. Johnny Quinn, Dietary Supervisor, expresses his love for our Elders by plowing up a garden spot and helping our Elders plant the seeds and put in the plants. The garden has now been planted and our Elders are watching it grow. Bobby Noblitt especially has a special interest in the garden and for good reason. The green beans have been named in his honor," Bobby Noblitt, Green Beans". Bobby helped Johnny to plant the green beans and he is often observed sitting in the solarium looking out at the garden. He and several of our Elders as well as staff are watching the garden grow. When the green beans are ready Bobby will help pick and snap them for cooking. Guess what? Our Elders have already had fresh strawberries to eat from our garden. Thanks to Johnny Quinn who has a green thumb, over a gallon of strawberries have been picked and enjoyed by our Elders.
Congratulations to Janet Jeter on the birth of her first grandchild, Danielle Alissa Rena Stewart, weighing in at 5 lbs. 4 ozs. She was born on April 17, 2004. Also Janets daughter will be graduating from 5-K on May 21st. Braxton Jones, son of Beatrice Broadus, will graduate from Dorman on May 25th. He will attend Benedict College in the fall. Jucoquis Jones, nephew of Greer Casey, Dietary, will graduate from Dorman also. He has a full scholarship to Furman University in the fall.
Sympathy is extended to several of our families and staff in the loss of their loved ones. Mrs. Rosa Simmons, Mrs. Letha Jones and Mrs. Mariya Shkarina are our Elders we have lost over the past month. Mrs. Doris Byrd(CNA) and Mrs. Gloria Crocker in the loss of their uncle and cousin, also to Ms. Brenda Kerns (CNA) in the loss of her brother.

No service is too small and none too great, from the giving of a cup of cold water to the laying down of ones life
Ms. Elise Bridwell is our newest resident on Northern Estates. Ms. Nellie Bagwell and Ms. Marva McMullen are our newest residents on Eastside Village and on Westside Gardens we have Mrs. Elise Hollifield and Ms. Thelma Williams. We hope these new residents will enjoy their stay with us and will soon feel at home. Welcome to all these new residents and families.
We are in the process of adding a playground for the children who visit with us. An area scout member is constructing it and we hope to have it completed in the next few weeks. Our gardens have been planted and we hope to have a good harvest this year. Residents are looking forward to fresh picked veggies to eat. Thanks to Phyllis Williams, RN and Pine Gate Garden Club, for providing a new bench, wind socks and hanging baskets outside of Northern Estates. They are being used daily and visitors and residents are enjoying this added attraction. We also want to thank Ms. Gladys Bridwells daughter, Elaine Wade for planting flowers out in the beds in the front area of facility. Also, we have a Girl Scout troop who have planted the flowers in the beds in front of the building. As you can see there has been a lot of activity going on around the facility. If you would like to join in on some of the projects just let Sherry Wheeler or Sue Kemp know and we will try to coordinate it.

A Tribute to Mother's/Who is Mother?
Mother is half of the Father/Mother team, the one who gave birth to you as a child. When she first held you in her arms, she fell madly in love with you! She is the one that changed your diaper, gave you your bottle, bathed and dressed you. She is the one who tended to you when you were sick, wishes she could have bore your pain, but unable to even share it with you. There is none like a Mother.
If you have children, then you know what its like to be a Mother. Often, its a tough job, with unruly children, and many heartaches before they are grown. Sometimes a Mother is lucky that she has well-disciplined children, but only because she has done her best in order for them to be well-adjusted teenagers and later adults. Mostly, Mother sits and worries that she hasnt done her best with her children, especially if they dont turn out as she thought they should, with all the training she has given them.
Mother is a human being, capable of making mistakes. She is not perfect, just as none of us are perfect. But she is the one that we picture as being perfect during our childhood. As we become older, we realize that Mothers are capable of right and wrong ways of doing things, missing the mark, just as much as the next person. But she is still Mother. The thing that sets her apart is her everlasting love for her children and her intent that they lead normal, well-adjusted lives.
Not until we become adults, do we really begin to appreciate WHO Mother really is. She has nurtured you through your childhood, put up with your sassy ways and times of being lazy during your teenage years, and cried through your becoming an adult. But Mother was always there to encourage you when you made a mistake, although sometimes its hard not to show disappointment.
As we grow older and have our own children, we realize that Mother was a very strong person, and we begin to wonder can we ever fit into her shoes. No, we wear our own shoes .we can never do things the same as our Mother, although she has given us the pattern from which to build. Mothers are special. Sometimes we get busy doing the usual things in life, and lose sight of the most important aspect loving our family. And Mother happens to be where that family began. Without Mother, there would never have been family. To all our Mothers we at Mountainview wish you a very happy Mothers Day.
