From the Desk of . . . . . As you are aware from the various news outlets, the flu vaccine shortage is indeed real and causing huge problems throughout the country. The issue was even discussed at last weeks final presidential debate. Our supplier for all of our medications is White Oak Pharmacy, Inc. and they have assured us that they are doing everything possible to obtain adequate doses for their customers. We have also been working to attempt to find a supplier. In the meantime, we are asking all of our friends and families to refrain from visiting the facility if you have ANY flu like symptoms. If the vaccine does not become available in such quantity to provide the one hundred twenty doses that we require, we could be looking at a very difficult winter for all of us. On a more pleasant subject, I want to praise all of our staff who assisted with and participated in the South Carolina Eden Alternative Coalitions annual meeting held here in town at the new Marriott Hotel. Our lead Social Worker, Mrs. Sue Kemp had much to do with the planning of the event utilizing a football theme for the conference. Our staff won the "Spirit Award" which was determined through competition. I am so proud of this group, Kellie Etters, Donna Tracy, Robin Jones, Anna Brown, Missy McDaniel, Elaine Meadows, Jessie Lyles, and Justine Chenette. Another award to add to our growing list. Please plan on joining us for Family Night on October the 28th. Details are inside and please visit with us often. Wilson K. Dillard, Administrator Top
Only One It is fall of the year and we have moved away from graduation and the summer sports. We now face toward the continuation of the school year and the holidays. It is interesting during the various seasons to watch parents as their children participate in school functions, graduation, plays, and sports. The family arrives and they cheer for the others, applaud for the others, but in reality, they are there for one person. They want to see their child walk across the platform and receive a diploma. They want to see their child run past and score the points. Anything our child does gives a thrill a hundred times that which another child possesses or does. This is true as we walk through life and live it with our family. One of the great writer's of the past was asked, "is fame all it is cracked up to be?" The writer responded, "yes, it is when I see my mother's face!" The joy and pride experienced by his mother was the great value. There is something special about parents, grandparents, children, and siblings. The story of life continues and we value each page of it. Here, at Mountainview, we have beaming parents, grandparents, and siblings. They, the residents and staff, are beaming often in regard to the accomplishments, and even the mere existence, of family members. Watch for it the next time. It is not that we are not aware of it, just be keenly aware of it. In the words of Wesley, "is your heart as my heart? Then give me your hand." As the holidays approach -- let there be a lot of hand holding! Keith E. Taylor Top
NEWS FROM ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES Since you last heard from activities we have really had a big surprise. Our Quaker Parrot, Morris, that we thought was a male has layed three eggs, but we know that males don't lay eggs. Should we still call our parrot, Morris? Our Elders really enjoyed going to the fair, the weather was good and the food was good also. They enjoyed the candy apples, cotton candy, and polish sausage. Western Day, which is usually held in September will be held on October 22nd. We are sorry that Mr. Henderson will not be able to join us this year with his horses and buggy due to his health. We hope he will soon feel better. The Tippers are back and will be hosting a Halloween Party for our Elders on October 26. On October 29th the Leo Club of Pacolet Middle School will also be hosting a Halloween Party for us. We look forward to seeing all of the children, they really brighten the lifes of our Elders. Our activity department will be having a pizza sale on October 29th and will need everyones support for it to be a success. For more information please call the activity department at 582-4175. DON'T QUIT When things go wrong as they sometimes will When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out, Don't give up though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow, Success is failure turned inside out The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem worse That you must not quit. This poem was given to Mr.Dillard by Peggy Garmon on Westside Gardens. She stated she got through each day by living by this poem. Top
WORDS OF WISDOM If we ever have a golden age, it will be because golden hearts are beating in it. Top
Eden Conference The SC Eden Alternative Conference was held in September at the Spartanburg Marriott. Mountainview and some of the other upstate nursing homes was host for this event. Fun was had by everyone who attended. Mountainview Players who are Kelley Etters, Missy McDaniel, Jessie Lyles, Robin Jones, Donna Tracy, Justine Chenette and Elaine Meadows did a fantastic job in their workshop and in the opening session. They also preformed their Mountainview cheer at the special event and won the spirit award for us. We are really proud of these ladies and hope they will preform for us soon so staff and residents can see them. Sue Kemp Top
